Today I read John 11, where Jesus’ miracle of raising Lazarus from the dead caused fear in the Pharisees and a determination to kill Jesus. Today I considered that we have to watch out for people who want to destroy those that are more powerful or better than them.

Lazarus’ Rising and Increased Believers

Lazarus rising from the dead brings people to Christ (John 11:1-57). Mary and Martha sent word to Jesus that their brother Lazarus was very sick because they wanted Jesus to heal him. Jesus waited two days before going to Judea and told his disciples Lazarus was asleep as in dead so they were going to Judea. Martha met Jesus and said she believes he is the Christ. Martha then went and got Mary, who was home grieving, to come meet Jesus. Mary said Jesus could have saved Lazarus and started crying. Jesus started crying with her and then went to Lazarus’ burial cave. Jesus told them to take away the stone and Martha hesitated but did so because she thought Lazarus being dead four days and would stink. Jesus told them they would see the glory of God, told God thank you for hearing him, and called Lazarus to come out of his grave. Lazarus walked out in his burial wrappings. Jesus’ miracles caused many to believe but some ran to tell the Pharisees. The Pharisees feared everyone believing in Jesus and losing their status with the Romans. The chief priest said Jesus needed to die. Jesus went to live next to the wilderness and wasn’t seen openly anymore. The Pharisees were looking for Jesus and expected him to come to the Passover.

Questions and Thoughts for Today

The Jews wanted to maintain their power among the Romans. Jesus knew to avoid them. There are many examples in history of people going after others because of jealousy, their ego, wanting to keep power, wanting to gain power, or just wanting be better than another person. We have to be careful of these people, praying for God’s guidance and protection to avoid their traps.

How often do you immediately pray when you know someone is going after you or others?
