Today I read Genesis 31, which talks about Jacob fleeing with Jacob’s wives, children, and flock from Laban. Laban’s mindset toward Jacob changed. God told Jacob to leave and he did. Today I considered that we have to recognize when mindsets change, move at God’s directions, and God will protect us.
Changed Mindset
God can let us know when others change their mindset. Laban and his sons were jealous of how God blessed whatever they stated would go to Jacob. They wanted all the cattle, saying Jacob took everything (Genesis 31:1). Jacob served Laban for 20 years even through deception and changing his wages. Jacob understood that even though the blessing would be taking care of Laban’s daughters and grandchildren, he lost favor with Laban. We can be blessed by and loyal to careers, friends, family, and communities for years. God can let us know if and when those areas of our lives change to no longer be a blessing.
Move at God’s Direction
Plan your exit when God tells you to leave. God told Jacob to leave and Jacob planned everything out. Jacob drew away his wives to explain everything so others could not overhear. Both Rachel and Leah supported their husband including in taking their flock and goods. Their planning was so good it took three days for anyone to know they were gone. We should go when God tells us to go. Leaving in decency and order requires planning. We should pray and let God help us plan everything out when leaving a job, moving to another location, or converting our careers.
God Protects Obedient Moves
When God directs us to move and we move, God protects us. Laban and his sons chased after Jacob, Rachel, and Leah for seven days. During that time God warned Laban in a dream about even saying something wrong to Jacob. Laban continued to pursue but knew Jacob was protected by God. Jacob explained that he worked for everything, while Laban said everything belonged to him. Both agreed to a truce. Jacob offered a sacrifice to God. We should remember God is protecting us when we move and thank God for that protection.
