Today I read 1 Samuel 10, in which Saul is anointed by Samuel and Saul becomes king of Israel. Today I considered that even when people get what they ask for, some will still be unhappy.
Saul Becoming King and the Reactions
Saul becomes king with mixed reactions from the people (1 Samuel 10:1-27). Samuel poured a vial of oil on Saul’s head to anoint him captain over Israel. Samuel told Saul things he would encounter in Zelah, in Tabor, and at the hill of God as signs God is with him. Samuel instructed Saul to wait for him for seven days while he gave offerings to God. Samuel assembled the people at Mizpeh and told them they had rejected the God who saved them and they were getting the king they requested. Samuel had all the tribes come near and narrowed it to the tribe of Benjamin, the family of Matri, to Saul. Saul had hid himself so they ran and got him. Saul was unique and stood head and shoulders above everyone else and the people shouted. Samuel explained the kingdom. Some people’s hearts were touched by God but the children of Belial despised him. Everyone went home.
Questions and Thoughts for Today
The people asked for a king over Israel and the loving God, our Heavenly Father, that was rejected by the people, still gave them a king. Some people despised the gift God gave. In our lives people can react this same way. They say they want something from you or want a certain thing in their lives but when they get it they reject it.
Can you think of an example of someone getting what they requested and rejecting it?
