Today I read 1 Samuel 19, in which Saul tries to kill David but David was protected by love and God’s power. Today I considered that the love of others can offer safety and God can use unexpected things to protect us.

Protected By Love and God’s Power

Saul wanted David dead but Saul’s children and the prophet that anointed him protected David (1 Samuel 19:1-24). Saul told his son Jonathan and his servants about killing David. Jonathan told David to hide until he talked to Saul. Jonathan reminded Saul of David’s acts and innocence and Saul promised not to kill him. David came back to Saul like before. After another war in which David killed the Philistines, the evil spirit came upon Saul. Saul tried to kill David with a spear but he escaped. Saul sent people to David’s house to kill him. Saul’s daughter Michal lowered David through a window and put a dummy in the bed saying David was sick. David went to Samuel, told him everything, and followed him to Naioth. Samuel was with prophets prophesying in Naioth. Saul found out where David went and sent messengers three times to get David. Each time the messengers started prophesying when they got close to Samuel and the prophets. Saul went himself and also prophesied. David was protected because of the love Jonathan and Michal had for him and through God’s power.

Questions and Thoughts for Today

God can use things we do not expect to protect us. God used the power of prophesy to protect David. The spirit of God came upon the three sets of messengers Saul sent to get David and also upon Saul when Saul went to get David. The power of prophesy can be such a blessing but in this instance it was something that stopped the messengers and Saul in their tracks.

What unexpected thing have you seen God use to protect His child or children?
