Today I read 1 Samuel 20, in which David and Jonathan renew their covenant, agree to find out the truth, and grieve at parting. Today I considered that true friends find out and warn each other about danger.
A Friend’s Warning
David went to his true friend Jonathan to find out if he was still in danger (1 Samuel 20:1-42). David fled Naioth and went to find Jonathan. David was upset asking Jonathan what he had done that Saul wanted to kill him. Jonathan said he will find out if Saul really wants him dead and tell David. Jonathan had a plan during the new moon meals to would find out the truth. They agreed upon a date, location, and signal when meeting again. David and Jonathan renewed their covenant with both agreeing to show kindness to each other’s house forever. Saul told Jonathan during the new moon he wanted to kill David. At the agreed time, Jonathan gave the signal that Saul wanted to kill David. David came out when Jonathan was alone and they cried together before parting to go separate ways. Real friends give the truth and will even grieve with you before leaving.
Questions and Thoughts for Today
Real friends will tell you if they know you are walking into danger. Jonathan did not know for sure at first and had to find out if Saul really wanted to kill David. Jonathan cautiously, through planning, found out the truth. He then told David in a safe manner so David would not be harmed.
Do you have an example of a person warning another of real danger?
