Today I read Genesis 20 and 21, which talks about Abraham’s interactions with Abimelech and the birth of Isaac. Abimelech realized it would be wise to be on the good side of God’s chosen Abraham. The birth of Abraham’s heir changed things for his household. Today I thought about things we do not expect to bless us and God being there for all His children.
Unexpected Blessing – Abraham, Sarah, and Abimelech
God can use things we do not expect to bless us. Abraham’s wife Sarah was so beautiful Abraham feared being killed by people for her and had Sarah say they are siblings (Genesis 20:11). Abimelech had Sarah come to his household. God warned Abimelech that Sarah is married and to give her back. Abimelech returned Sarah but also enriched Abraham by gifting him with cattle and servants. Abimelech contacted Abraham again and made an honesty and kindness agreement with Abraham because Abraham is favored by God (Genesis 21:22-23). God can also protect us and enrich us from unexpected people and places.
God’s Presence – Abraham’s Heir
God blesses the chosen heir, but God can also be with the other children. God blessed Sarah to give birth to Isaac (Genesis 21:2) as God had previously told Abraham of Sarah’s coming child (Genesis 18:10). Isaac is Abraham’s heir. Sarah had Abraham send away Hagar and Hagar’s mocking son, Ishmael. Abraham was concerned about doing this but God told him listen to Sarah. God ensured Ishmael received water while in the desert and was with Ishmael as he grew. God may bless some children to receive an inheritance from their parents but God is also with the other children. God hears the cries of all his children we just have to remember we can call out to Him.
