Today I read 2 Chronicles 10, in which the people rebelled against Rehoboam’s harsh rule. Today I considered that people should think about who they are getting advice from before they make a decision.
Which Counsel to Choose
Rehoboam considered Israel’s request for relief, even asking counselors, but his choice resulted in rebellion (2 Chronicles 10:1-19). Solomon died and his son Rehoboam became king. All of Israel asked Rehoboam to be easier on them than Solomon. Rehoboam promised an answer within three days. Rehoboam asked the old men who had been with Solomon what he should do; they said be easier on the people. Rehoboam then asked his friends who grew up with him; they said be harsher on the people. Following his friend’s advice, Rehoboam’s harsh answer resulted in the people saying they are getting nothing, not even an inheritance out of working, and refusing to work for him. We should consider who is advising us before we listen to them.
Questions and Thoughts for Today
Rehoboam had two choices given to him. One choice was from wise men who listened to the wisest man king Solomon. The second choice was to listen to those with the same experiences as him. Rehoboam’s second choice was like the common phrase “the blind leading the blind”.
Have you ever considered who was giving you advice, including their experiences and education, before you listened to them?
