Today I read 2 Chronicles 26, in which Uzziah was king of Judah until he broke God’s rules by burning incense in the temple. Today I considered that we need to keep the commitment to God that we had when we first came to God.
Pride Destroying a King
A king that followed God from his teenage years through half a century let his pride direct him to destruction (2 Chronicles 26:1-23). Amaziah’s son Uzziah became king at 16 years old and reigned 52 years in Jerusalem. Uzziah did what was right and sought God in the days of Zechariah, so God prospered him. God helped Uzziah against the Philistines and Arabians. The Ammonites gave him gifts. Uzziah loved cultivating animals and crops, and increased his cattle and vineyards. Uzziah built towers, fortified walls, and expanded his territory. He had mighty men of valor and a large army under them, giving them weapons and even engines to shoot arrows and large stones. Uzziah’s name spread abroad. When he was strong he decided to go in God’s house and burn incense even though that was the priest’s job. God struck him with leprosy. Uzziah’s son started ruling. Uzziah had to live in special housing, because of his leprosy, until his death. Whatever brought us to God when we were young, we have to remember when we are old, so that pride in accomplishments does not lead to our destruction.
