Today I read Genesis 25, about Abraham’s preparations for death, Ishmael’s descendants, and the fate of Jacob and Esau. Today I considered how we should be prepare for our death like Abraham, God providing for all our descendants, and directing our resources to those God says will appreciate the blessing.

Abraham’s Preparations for Death

God allows us to ensure a smooth transition for our heirs and some of our wishes to be met even after death. Abraham had children by concubines which he provided gifts and sent away (Genesis 25:6). Abraham protected Isaac’s inheritance before he died. Abraham was buried with his wife Sarah in the cave he chose and purchased. Even today God allows us to give to our children and purchase burial sites before our death. We also have the option of writing a will to ensure our wishes are met after death.

Ishmael’s Descendants

God protected and prospered Abraham’s descendants from his son Ishmael even though Isaac was the true heir of the promise. Ishmael was blessed as seen by his children becoming 12 princes with towns and castles (Genesis 25:16). God can provide and take care of all our children even if they are not the main individual inheriting the blessings.

Fate of Jacob and Esau

God predicted the fate of the twins in Rebekah’s belly, and the first step was taken by Jacob and Esau toward God’s prediction. Esau came home from being in the field and sold his birthright to Jacob for some bread and pottage of lentils (Genesis 25:29-34). God allowed the birthright to go to the younger son instead of the elder who despised the birthright. God knows which of us will cherish His blessings and can let us know and direct His blessings toward that individual.

Questions and Thoughts for Today

When God told Rebekah the younger son would be over the elder son, this was not normal for the times.

Has God ever surprised you with how he asked you to direct your resources and time?
