Today I read 1 Kings 19, in which Elijah flees from Jezebel to a mountain cave but God blesses him with Elisha. Today I considered that God will give us the energy to complete the tasks He sets for us, the encouragement to continue going, and the direction where to go.

Elijah Aided by God to Flee

Elijah ran to save his life but God gave him the strength for the journey (1 Kings 19:1-8). King Ahab told his wife Jezebel what Elijah did on mount Carmel. Jezebel sent Elijah a message that she was going to kill him. Elijah ran to Judah and left his servant there. He then went to the wilderness and laid under a Juniper tree to die. God sent an angel with food and water to Elijah. The energy in the food was enough to last Elijah 40 days to make it to Horeb, the mount of God. When doing as God desires, God can give us the energy we need to make it.

Elijah’s Next Mission

Elijah thought he was alone but God told him otherwise and gave him another mission (1 Kings 19:9-21). Elijah went to a mountain cave on Horeb and believed he was the only one left that served God. He heard a strong wind, an earthquake, and a fire, but God came in the still small voice. God told Elijah to go to Damascus and anoint Hazael king over Syria, Jehu king over Israel, and Elisha a prophet. They will slay the enemy. God told Elijah he was not alone because 7,000 people in Israel did not worship Baal. Elijah went and invited Elisha to follow him and Elisha did. God can encourage us and direct us to our next path.

Questions and Thoughts for Today

Even though Elijah was running for his life, he put his servant in a safe location before continuing to run. This shows a leader that tried to protect those loyal to him.

Can you give an example of a leader that tried to protect those under their leadership?
