Today I read 2 Samuel 5, where David is made king of Israel by the elders; David captures Jerusalem from the Jebusites, and the Philistines are defeated in the valley of Rephaim. Today I considered we should pray before each battle or activity in which we are trying to win and pray about other parts of our lives like marriage.
King Duties and More
David received approval to be king, conquered people in the land, obtained more spouses, and defeated more Philistines with God’s help (2 Samuel 5:1-25). All the elders of Israel came to Hebron, made an agreement with David, and made him king over Israel. David was 30 years old when he began to reign. David went to the Jebusites living in Jerusalem and they taunted David that he would have to kill the lame and the blind to get their land. David said to do so, obtained the stronghold of Zion and called it the city of David. The king of Tyre sent wood, carpenters, and masons to build David a house. David took more concubines and wives, and had more children. The Philistines heard about David being king, came against him in Rephaim, God said fight, and David won. They came again in Rephaim, God said not to go, go behind the Philistines and wait until they hear a sound because God will fight for them. David obeyed and they won again.
Questions and Thoughts for Today
David took on the duties and responsibilities of being a ruler with not just winning the hearts of the people but also fighting when enemies came against them. A good ruler cares about how the people view and follow him or her along with making sure they ensure safety and basic needs for their people. Do your rulers care about these things for you?
David went to God about the battles he would face and listened to what God told him to do. He was continuously victorious in battle. I wonder if David prayed about all the spouses and concubines he took. So far I do not see where he did and that is something I believe everyone should do. Pray and follow God concerning taking a spouse so you have the person God would have you marry. Do your pray before you date or marry?
