Today I read 2 Samuel 6, where David was bringing the Ark to Jerusalem, paused the journey because of fear, but brought the Ark to Jerusalem. Today I considered that we should consider following David’s example in the Bible of fearing God, and not having children with someone that despises our love of God.

David Faced Fear and Scorn Yet Praised God

David loved God and wanted the Ark of the Lord near where he lived, faced fear and the scorn of his spouse but did not stop loving God (2 Samuel 6:1-23). David took the Ark of the Covenant from Abinadab’s house with Abinadab’s sons Uzzah and Ahio driving the cart. David and all the Israelites played all types of instruments before the Lord as they traveled. The oxen stubbled and Uzzah put out his hand to steady the Ark, but God became angry and killed him. David was upset about Uzzah dying and fearful of God thus leaving the Ark of the Lord in Obededom’s house for three months. God blessed Obededom’s household. David heard, sacrificed before the ark, and had them carry the Ark, bringing the Ark to Jerusalem with David dancing before the Ark with all his might. The people were playing instruments and shouting before the Ark as they transported it. Michal told David his behavior was shameful and David said God chose him over others and he’ll continue his behavior. After this confrontation, David did not have children with Michal, a woman that despised the love David had for God.

Questions and Thoughts for Today

We have to follow God’s instructions and not be overcome by excitement. God gave specific instructions for taking care of the Ark of the Covenant including how to move it. David loved God, wanted Him near, and was moving the Ark. David was disobedient in transporting the Ark of the Lord by cart and Uzzah died. The next time David was brave enough to move the Ark to complete the journey they carried the Ark, which is what they were supposed to do, and made it to the place in Jerusalem David had prepared.

When have you heard from God but tried to do it your own way and failed?

Considering Michal and David’s relationship history, I understand Michal but agree with David. Michal went from a husband wanting her so much to a husband with multiple wives and a love for God. I believe in only having one spouse per what the Bible says (1Timothy 3:2). Michal went from a husband weeping and crying at losing her to a husband that rejoiced more for God than loving anyone else. I understand her jealousy but we are to have no other gods before the Lord (Exodus 20:3). We must not be jealous of our spouse’s love for God. We are also supposed to love God above all else.

What can you do to encourage those around you to love God above all else?
