Today I read 2 Samuel 9, in which David remembers and repays the kindness of Jonathan. Today I considered that when you make a pledge with a good friend, you should try to honor it.

David and Mephibosheth

David looked for survivors from Saul’s line to repay Jonathan’s kindness (2 Samuel 9:1-13). Saul’s servant Ziba told him Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth, who had lame feet, had survived. David had them bring Mephibosheth from Lodebar to Jerusalem. David promised Mephibosheth he could eat at David’s table all his life, gave him Saul’s land, and gave him Ziba’s household as servants to take care of him. David remembered Jonathan and kept his promise.

Questions and Thoughts for Today

David and Jonathan were great friends, loved each other, made a pledge to each other, and never betrayed each other from what I have read so far in the Bible. They had a true friendship such that David honored his promise even after Jonathan died. That is the kind of friendship it would be great to develop.

Do you have a true friend that would even honor a promise to you after death?
