Today I read 2 Samuel 23, stating David’s last words and providing information about David’s mighty men. Today I considered that David’s heart was with God even in his last words to everyone and we should also have a heart for God. I also considered the courageousness of David’s mighty men fighting even when they were alone.

David Loved God Even At Death

David was considered an Israel psalm writer and his last words were about God impacting rulers, His covenant, and destruction of those worshiping other gods (2 Samuel 23:1-7). David said God had him speak about a ruler being “just, ruling in the fear of God.” Even though David’s house was not right, God was keeping His covenant. Those worshiping Belial shall be removed and burned, and anyone touching them must wear iron.

Might of the Mighty Men

David’s 37 mighty men were strong, brave and did not give up (2 Samuel 23:8-39). Adino the chief mighty man could kill 800 people at one time. Eleazar fought so hard and long with few other warriors that his hand was stuck to his sword. Shammah fought protecting the ground full of food when the people ran, and won victory through God. Three mighty men risked their lives for David to get water from the well where the enemy camped. Abishai fought 300 men. Benaiah slew a lion when fighting in snow in a pit, killed lion-like men, and was over David’s guard. Other mighty men are named.

Questions and Thoughts for Today

David’s love for the Lord was from his youth even until his last words. God knew David’s heart was with Him, protected David, and kept the covenant with David’s lineage.

Is your heart really with God?

David’s mighty men sometimes fought hundreds alone or in small groups. They fought until they couldn’t release their sword. Imagine your hand rubbed so raw your flesh sticks and cramped so tight around your sword that you can’t release it. They kept fighting even when all the warriors and people around them fled.

Have you ever met someone strong enough in character and might to fight even when everyone else runs?
