Today I read James 3, about our words showing our faith and our works showing whether we are wise or unwise. Today I considered that what words we allow to come out of our mouths do matter.
Faith Shown Through Words
The words out of our mouths matter (James 3:1-12). Horses are guided and controlled by the bit in their mouth. Ships are guided by the rudder. The mouth is a small part of the body but can cause us to corrupt the whole body. The mouth has been used to praise God and to curse mankind that God made. This is not how it should be. A spring can only bring sweet or foul water not both and a tree can only bring fruit of its kind implying the tongue brings forth what is inside the person. Since mankind can tame all kinds of animals on the earth, we need to tame our tongues.
Real Wisdom
People can tell the difference between the wise and the unwise by their behavior and works (James 3:13-18).The real wise are peaceful, pure, gentle, merciful, have good conversation and you see their wisdom in their works. The unwise are material, sensual, full of conflict and confusion, and their work is evil.
Questions and Thoughts for Today
What we speak in our lives and over the lives of others does matter. God wants our mouths to be filled with good things like praising God and speaking life, positivity, health, healing, love, joy, and peace over others. I remember the phrase “if you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything at all.” Remember that phrase can be one step toward controlling the tongue.
What do you do to control your tongue?
