Today I read Deuteronomy 24, where Israelites were given laws related to divorce, marriage, capturing relatives, and the treatment of poor, strangers, orphans, and widows. Today I considered that God wants us to care about the poor, foreigner, orphan, and widow.

Miscellaneous Rules

Miscellaneous rules on marriage and the treatment of others (Deuteronomy 24:1-22). Israelite men were given the right to divorce their wife and she has the choice to remarry. If she remarries someone else, she cannot go back to her prior husband. The first year a man is married he is not to go out to war but spend time with his wife. Men are to be killed for stealing and selling their relatives. Israelites are to give poor servants their wages. When Israelites go through to harvest crops the first time, they are to leave leftover and dropped crops for strangers, orphans, and widows to harvest.

Questions and Thoughts for Today

The Israelites were to treat them fairly and also leave provision for the poor, foreigner, orphan, and widow. This shows that God wants us to care for them. Many people help those in these categories including donating to charities, personally helping others, giving people jobs, and more.

What have you done this year to help someone that was either poor, a foreigner, an orphan, or a widow?
