Today I read Ecclesiastes 5 and 6, in which the vanity of vows and vanity of riches is discussed. Today I recognized that being rich does not make some people’s lives better.

Promises and Vanity of Riches

Everyone needs to be careful of their words to God and there is vanity in keeping and hording riches (Ecclesiastes 5:1-6:12). Be careful of what you say to and promise God. Sometimes it is better to keep quiet because you need to keep your promises to God. God sees when the poor are exploited and the injustice in the world. The profit of the earth is given to everyone including those working in the field. A working man gets good sleep. When people love riches, they are never satisfied and have trouble sleeping. When they die, they can’t take it with them. God gifts all people with eating and enjoying the fruits of their labor. Some wealthy people never want for anything, but a stranger gets to eat their wealth. It is better for a person to be miscarried than to live, have a lot of children, but do no good in the world. No one knows what will come after they leave.

Questions and Thoughts for Today

Wealth is a burden and cage for some people. People who are so focused on their wealth they never have enough. They do not really enjoy the blessing of the wealth. They may even lose sleep over accumulating wealth or holding on to the wealth they have. Their wealth is even given to someone else to enjoy.

What problems to you believe wealthy people obsessed with riches live with?
