Today I read Daniel 5, where Belshazzar was warned of his downfall with the writing on the wall, because Belshazzar did not give God the glory. Today I considered that God always requires that we give God the glory.

Warning In the Handwriting on the Wall

The king of Babylon defiled God’s vessels did not give God the glory and lost his life and the kingdom (Daniel 5:1-31). King Belshazzar was having a feast and told them to bring the vessels taken out of God’s house in Jerusalem to drink out of. Belshazzar and his family drank from the cups while praising false gods like gold, silver, and brass. A hand wrote upon the wall and it terrified Belshazzar to the point that he even looked different. None of Belshazzar’s soothsayers, astrologers, or Chaldeans could read and interpret the writing on the wall. The queen came into the room and told Belshazzar about Daniel having the spirit of God, wisdom, and being appointed a leader during Belshazzar’s father’s reign. They had Daniel come to interpret the dream. Daniel explained how they had sinned and did not give God the glory even though Belshazzar knew what his father Nebuchadnezzar had went through. Daniel told them God was ending their kingdom, and it would be divided by the Medes and Persians. Belshazzar was killed by Darius, a Median, that night.

Questions and Thoughts for Today

God requires that we give God the glory. Belshazzar foolishly gave false gods praise and did not acknowledge that God has control over everything. Belshazzar lost his life and the kingdom. We must give God the glory or we can lose everything.

When have you seen someone praising false gods and/or their self and then they lost everything?
