Today I read Hebrews 9, explaining that Jesus’ death was a permanent sacrifice for all of us so no more sacrifices are needed. Today I considered how blessed we are to not need to make blood sacrifices.
Temporary to Permanent Sacrifice
The change from temporary sacrifices by priests to the permanent sacrifice from Christ. According to the law, a blood sacrifice was needed to atone for sin. Under the old covenant, a priest was chosen to make a sacrifice in the inner sanctuary once a year. This sacrifice of blood from animals lasted as a covering for the people for a year before the next sacrifice needed to be made. Jesus’ sacrifice is the new covenant. When Jesus sacrificed himself for all of us, it was a permanent sacrifice that lasts forever. There is no more need for animal sacrifices because Jesus paid for it all with his sacrifice.
Questions and Thoughts for Today
I am glad I do not have to kill animals to atone for my sins. I have never personally killed an animal and honestly prefer to not need to do so. I thank God that Jesus came and atoned for our sins, making our lives better and more abundant.
Did you realize how blessed we are that Jesus’ sacrifice keeps us from having to make sacrifices?
