Today I read Joshua 15:16-19, in which Caleb’s daughter asked for land and water. Today I considered that Caleb granted her request like any loving father would, but he also gave her double what she requested.

Achsah’s Land and Springs

Caleb’s daughter, received both land and water after the victory (Joshua 15:16-19). The Israelites had been fighting fiercely to take the land but some areas were harder to conquer than others. Caleb promised to marry his daughter, Achsah (whose name means adorned, reflecting grace, beauty, or decorative ornaments) to the person that killed Kirjath-sepher. Othniel took the land and then married Achsah. Achsah told Othniel to ask her father for land. She realized the land her father gave them did not have water. Achsah went in person to ask her father for water. Caleb gave his daughter more than one spring, he gave her two springs of water. Caleb gave Achsah double what she requested.

Questions and Thoughts for Today

When deciding where to stay a person needs to consider not just the land but the available water resources close at hand. Achsah understood that she needed more than just land, she needed water. She needed water to drink, water plants, cook, clean, water livestock, and more. Water is a valuable resource. When she asked for the water from her father, her father gave her double what she requested.
